Isn’t it funny how the obvious just doesn’t come into focus, until something gives you a jolt? That happened to me this week when I enjoyed a tour of the new Central Huron Fire Hall. While the new digs are very nice, it was the boots, coats and fire helmets that caught my attention. They were all neatly hung up, ready to go whenever the next emergency arises. It hit me that each hook on the wall represented one person who had committed themselves to make a difference in our community. When the fire siren blows, the gear comes off the wall, then a volunteer slips into it. These folks stop whatever they are doing to “high tail” it to the fire hall.
The fire hall is a picture of what community is all about. We are all interconnected in some way and even if we don’t take notice of it, we do depend on each other. The man who was giving us the tour was Dan Groves, a well known local merchant. He tends to his business and enjoys his home in Clinton. However, when fire siren blows he is out his door to serve our community.
Similarly, many of our other firefighters also live and work here. However, if many of them discovered they could no longer make their living in our community, they would need to find employment somewhere else. Who then would answer the call when the siren blows?
Our communities need to be strong in every way. Participating in our local economy is a vital part of what each one of us can do to ensure we continue to have the services we need. It is an honour for us to all take part in community growth, by shopping local.
Your support goes a long way!
